Kuthengo Camp

Overview

We really like Kuthengo Camp for its simplicity and location. It sits on the edge of an open plain within Liwonde National Park, an area that’s become one of Malawi’s top wildlife destinations in recent years.

Liwonde has seen a huge amount of conservation work, and the results are starting to show, with elephants, hippos and a growing predator population. What makes it particularly appealing is how quiet it still feels compared to other safari destinations.

The camp itself is small and unfussy, but comfortable, with everything you need for a good stay. It works well as part of a Malawi itinerary, especially if you’re looking to include a proper safari experience without the crowds.

Simple and comfortable tents overlooking the plains

The tents at Kuthengo are set out to make the most of the open views in front of camp, where wildlife often passes through.

Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with hot bucket showers and all the essentials. The style is simple and practical, which suits the setting well and keeps the focus on the surrounding landscape.

Activities

A mix of classic safari and river-based experiences

Activities at Kuthengo include game drives and walking safaris within Liwonde National Park, with good chances of seeing elephants, hippos and a variety of other wildlife.

Boat safaris along the Shire River are a real highlight here, offering close-up views of hippos, crocodiles and birdlife. It’s a more relaxed way to experience the park and a nice contrast to time spent on drives.

The overall pace is easygoing, making it a good place to balance activity with time to simply enjoy being in the bush.
