Simple, authentic and all about the guiding

Offbeat Mara is one of those camps that focuses on what really matters – great guides, great locations, and a relaxed safari experience.

Overview

Offbeat Mara is a camp we often recommend for travellers looking for a more low-key, traditional safari experience in the Masai Mara. Located in the Mara North Conservancy, it offers access to excellent wildlife viewing without the busier feel of the main reserve.

The camp itself is small and unfussy, which is part of its charm. What really stands out for us here is the quality of the guiding – consistently some of the best in the Mara. The guides know the conservancy incredibly well, and the flexibility of activities (including off-road driving and night drives) makes a big difference to the overall experience.

It’s not about luxury in the conventional sense, but more about being in the right place, with the right people, and enjoying a genuinely immersive safari.

Rooms

Comfortable and traditional safari tents

The tents at Offbeat Mara are simple, spacious, and comfortable, with a classic safari feel. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with hot bucket showers and flushing toilets, as well as a private veranda to sit and take in the surroundings.

The camp is unfenced, so wildlife often passes through, which adds to the overall experience. It’s not overdone, but it has everything you need for a comfortable stay in the bush.

Activities

Excellent guiding and flexibility make all the difference

Offbeat Mara offers a really strong range of safari activities, with a big emphasis on flexibility and guiding. Game drives are the main focus, with access to both the Mara North Conservancy and the Masai Mara Reserve, depending on your itinerary.

One of the big advantages of staying here is the ability to do off-road driving and night game drives within the conservancy, which adds a completely different dimension to wildlife viewing.

Guests can also enjoy bush meals, sundowners, and guided walks, as well as cultural visits to nearby Masai communities. It’s a great option for those who want to spend as much time as possible out exploring, rather than back at camp.
