Overview

Basecamp Masai Mara is a solid, reliable option that we often recommend for guests looking for good value in a great location. It sits along the Talek River, right on the boundary of the Masai Mara National Reserve, so you’re well placed to head out early and make the most of your time on safari.

The camp has a friendly and relaxed feel, and it’s larger than some of the more boutique properties, but still manages to offer a personalised experience. It’s also one of the more established camps in the area, with a strong focus on sustainability and working closely with the local Maasai community.

Wildlife viewing here is very good, particularly during the migration season, and it’s a great base if you want to explore different parts of the reserve. Overall, it’s a straightforward, well-run camp that delivers a classic Masai Mara safari without overcomplicating things.

Comfortable tents with everything you need

The tents at Basecamp Masai Mara are simple, comfortable, and well suited to the environment. Each one is set along the river, offering a nice sense of space and a chance to spot wildlife passing by.

All tents are en-suite, with flushing toilets and hot safari showers. They’re fully insect-proof and designed to be practical rather than overly luxurious, which fits well with the overall feel of the camp.

Activities

Easy access to the Masai Mara and a range of experiences

Game drives into the Masai Mara National Reserve are the main focus here, and you’re well positioned to explore some of the most wildlife-rich areas. The Big Five are all present, and during the migration months, this area can be particularly rewarding.

Cultural visits to nearby Maasai communities are also a key part of the experience, giving guests the chance to learn more about local life and traditions. Guided nature walks can be arranged outside the reserve, offering a different perspective compared to game drives.

Bush meals and sundowners can also be organised, and the camp is family-friendly, making it a good option for those travelling with children.
