Basecamp Samburu is all about good guiding, a great location, and a relaxed atmosphere

Overview

Basecamp Samburu is a nice option for those looking to explore a different side of Kenya, away from the busier Masai Mara. It’s set along the Ewaso Nyiro River, which naturally attracts a lot of wildlife, so you don’t have to go far to start seeing animals.

We like this camp for its simplicity and its connection to the surrounding environment. It’s not overly polished or luxurious, but it delivers a genuine safari experience that feels comfortable and easy. The area itself is known for its unique species like Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and gerenuk, which you won’t typically see elsewhere in Kenya.

The guiding is strong, and the pace here tends to be a bit slower, which works well if you’re combining Samburu with other parks. Overall, it’s a good, well-run camp that gives you access to a really interesting and less crowded part of the country.

Activities

A different kind of safari with unique wildlife

Game drives in Samburu National Reserve are the main focus here, and the area is well known for its distinct wildlife and more open, arid landscapes. You’ll have the chance to see species that are unique to the region, alongside elephants, lions, and plenty of birdlife.

Guided nature walks can be arranged in designated areas, offering a closer look at the smaller details of the bush. Cultural visits to local Samburu communities are also possible, providing insight into traditional ways of life.

Bush meals and sundowners can be organized, and the overall experience here feels a bit more relaxed and less crowded than some of the more well-known safari destinations.
