Set along the Talek River, right on the edge of the Masai Mara Reserve, this camp offers a great balance of accessibility and seclusion, with wildlife often wandering straight through camp.
Ilkeliani Camp is a great option for those wanting to be close to the action, while still enjoying a relaxed and intimate camp atmosphere.
Ilkeliani Camp is a really well-located camp on the border of the Masai Mara Reserve, tucked away in a quiet spot along the Talek River. We like how it feels private and calm, yet you’re only minutes from some of the best wildlife areas in the Mara. It’s a great base, especially during the migration season when crossings happen nearby.
The camp itself is small and thoughtfully laid out, with spacious tents set under the trees and overlooking the river. You’ll often see elephants, hippos, and plenty of plains game moving through the area, even when you’re just relaxing at camp.
Service here is warm and attentive, and the guiding is strong, with experienced guides who know how to make the most of the surrounding conservancies and reserve. It’s a very easy place to settle into, whether you’re on your first safari or returning to the Mara.
EnquireThe tents at Ilkeliani Camp are well spaced out along the river, giving each one a good sense of privacy. They’re large and airy, with proper beds, en-suite bathrooms, and both indoor and outdoor showers.
We like that they’ve kept things simple and comfortable without going over the top. Private verandas look out over the river, so you can often watch wildlife passing by without leaving your room. It’s a great mix of comfort and that classic safari feel.
EnquireGame drives are the main focus here, and you’re in a great spot for them. The camp sits right on the edge of the reserve, so you can quickly reach key wildlife areas, including migration crossing points in season.
Guided drives with experienced local guides give you a good chance of seeing the Big Five, along with plenty of other wildlife and birdlife. You can also arrange full-day game drives with picnic lunches, which we’d recommend if you want to explore further.
Hot-air balloon safaris can be organised for a different perspective over the Mara, and cultural visits to local Masai communities are also available for those interested.
Back at camp, bush breakfasts, lunches, and sundowners are all part of the experience, and the riverside setting makes these moments feel that bit more special.
