Mkulumadzi Lodge offers a more off-the-beaten-track safari, with good wildlife and very few other visitors.
We really like Mkulumadzi Lodge for how remote and uncrowded it feels. Set at the confluence of the Shire and Mkulumadzi Rivers in Majete Wildlife Reserve, it’s a great option if you’re looking to experience something a little different from the more well-known safari destinations.
Majete itself has been a real conservation success story, with wildlife reintroduced over the years, including the Big Five. Game viewing is steadily improving, and what stands out most is how few vehicles you’ll encounter while out on safari.
The lodge is well designed and comfortable, with a slightly more contemporary feel, but still very much connected to its surroundings. It’s a good place to slow down, enjoy the setting, and take in a quieter side of safari.
EnquireThe chalets at Mkulumadzi are set along the riverbank, each with a private deck looking out over the Shire River. They’re well spaced out, giving a good sense of privacy.
Rooms are large and airy, with en-suite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, and a simple, modern design. They’re comfortable without feeling overdone, and the river views add to the overall experience.
EnquireActivities at Mkulumadzi include game drives and walking safaris within Majete Wildlife Reserve, where you have the chance to see elephants, lions, rhinos and a range of plains game.
Boat trips along the Shire River are also a highlight, offering a different perspective and the chance to see hippos, crocodiles and birdlife up close. The pace here is generally more relaxed, which suits the setting well.
Time in camp is just as enjoyable, whether you’re watching wildlife from your deck or spending time by the pool overlooking the river.
