Pumulani Lodge

Overview

We really like Pumulani Lodge as a contrast to a safari-heavy itinerary. Set within a private reserve along the shores of Lake Malawi, it offers a completely different pace, focused on relaxation and time by the water.

The setting is what stands out most here. The lodge is built into the hillside, with wide views over the lake and plenty of space between villas, so it never feels busy. It’s a good option if you’re looking for something comfortable but still low-key.

Service is relaxed and friendly, and it’s the kind of place where you can spend your time as actively or quietly as you like, whether that’s out on the lake or simply enjoying the views from your room.

The villas at Pumulani are large and well spaced out along the hillside, each with a private terrace looking out over Lake Malawi.

They’re designed with plenty of natural light and open space, with en-suite bathrooms and simple, comfortable interiors. The layout makes the most of the setting, so you always feel connected to the lake below.

Activities

Relaxed days on and around the lake

There’s a good range of activities here, mostly centred around the lake. You can head out kayaking, paddleboarding or snorkelling, or take a boat trip to explore quieter areas along the shoreline.

For those who prefer to stay on land, there are walking trails through the reserve, as well as plenty of space to simply relax by the pool or on the beach.

It’s a flexible, easy-going stay, and a great way to wind down at the end of a trip.
