Overview

Serengeti Migration Camp is a strong choice if seeing the Great Migration is high on your list. Located in the north of the Serengeti, close to the Mara River, it’s perfectly placed for the dramatic river crossings that usually take place between July and October.

We really like this area as it feels a bit more remote and less crowded than the central Serengeti, while still offering exceptional wildlife. When the migration is in the area, the action can be incredible, but even outside those months, there’s plenty of resident game to keep things interesting.

The camp itself is larger than some of the smaller, more intimate options we tend to favour, but it’s well run and comfortable, with a nice balance between a classic safari feel and modern amenities. The setting along the river is a highlight, and it’s not uncommon to see wildlife passing through camp.

Rooms

Spacious tents with views over the river

The tents at Serengeti Migration Camp are roomy and well set out, each with an en-suite bathroom, flushing toilet, and hot shower. Private verandas look out over the surrounding bush or towards the river, which adds to the overall experience.

They’re more on the comfortable side than rustic, with proper beds and plenty of space to relax between activities. It’s a good option if you’re after something that still feels like a safari camp, but with a few extra comforts.

Activities

Incredible migration viewing and year-round wildlife

Game drives are the main focus here, and during migration season, much of your time will be spent following the herds and, if you’re lucky, witnessing river crossings along the Mara River. It’s one of the most sought-after wildlife experiences in Africa.

Outside of the migration months, the northern Serengeti still offers excellent game viewing, with predators, elephants, and plenty of plains game. Guided walks may be available in certain areas, offering a different perspective of the landscape.

Hot-air balloon safaris can also be arranged, giving you a unique view over the plains at sunrise. Back at camp, sundowners and evenings by the fire are a great way to end the day.
