Serengeti Pioneer Camp blends a classic safari feel with all the comfort you need, in one of the most wildlife-rich areas of the park.
Serengeti Pioneer Camp is one we often recommend for those looking for a more traditional safari feel without sacrificing comfort. It’s a relatively small camp, with canvas tents set amongst rocky outcrops overlooking the Moru Kopjes – an area we really like for its scenery and year-round wildlife.
The location is particularly good between December and March, when the Great Migration moves into the Southern Serengeti to calve, but it’s a strong choice at other times of year too thanks to resident game. You’re also far enough away from the busier central areas, which means a quieter, more relaxed experience on game drives.
The guiding here is solid, and the camp strikes a nice balance between authenticity and comfort. Evenings around the campfire, good food, and that feeling of being properly out in the bush all come as standard.
EnquireThe tents at Serengeti Pioneer Camp are styled to reflect the early days of safari, but with all the essentials for a comfortable stay. Each has an en-suite bathroom with flushing toilet, hot safari shower, and running water.
They’re spacious, with proper beds and simple but thoughtful furnishings. It’s not overly luxurious, but that’s part of the appeal – you still feel connected to the surroundings, especially with the sounds of the bush at night.
EnquireGame drives are the main focus here, and this area of the Serengeti is excellent for wildlife. Between December and March, the plains nearby fill with wildebeest during calving season, which also attracts plenty of predators – it can be a really exciting time to visit.
Outside of those months, you’ll still find good resident game, including big cats around the kopjes. Guided walks may be available in certain areas, which can be a nice way to experience the landscape on foot.
Hot-air balloon safaris can also be arranged, offering a completely different perspective over the Serengeti plains. Back at camp, sundowners and evenings around the fire are a highlight, and something we always enjoy when staying here.
