Set on a working coffee estate just outside the Ngorongoro Crater, this is a very different safari stay — peaceful, scenic, and a great place to unwind.
The Manor offers something a little different — combining East African wildlife with elegant, lodge-style comfort.
The Manor at Ngorongoro is one of those properties that feels quite unlike anywhere else on a typical safari circuit. Set within a lush coffee estate in the highlands near the Ngorongoro Crater, it offers a calm and cooler environment that’s perfect either before or after time spent out on game drives.
We really like the contrast it brings to a safari itinerary — after dusty days on the plains, coming back to manicured gardens, spacious cottages, and a slower pace is a welcome change. The suites are large and thoughtfully designed, each with its own fireplace, which is especially nice in the cooler evenings.
Service here is polished but still warm, and the food is consistently excellent, with much of it sourced locally. While it’s not inside the crater itself, it works very well as a base for early morning departures, and the overall experience feels more like a country retreat than a traditional safari camp.
EnquireThe Manor’s cottages are generously sized, each with a private entrance, en-suite bathroom, and a cosy fireplace for the cooler highland evenings. The design leans towards classic European country style, with a touch of East African character.
Large windows bring in plenty of natural light and views over the gardens or coffee estate, and the overall feel is very comfortable without being overly formal. It’s a great place to properly relax in between safari activities.
EnquireOf course, most guests come here for access to the Ngorongoro Crater, and full-day game drives into the crater are easily arranged. Early starts are worthwhile here, giving you the best chance to experience the wildlife before it gets busier.
Back at the lodge, there’s quite a bit to enjoy at a slower pace. Guided walks around the coffee estate are a nice way to spend a morning, and you can also visit nearby communities to get a better sense of local life in the area.
Horse riding is another option, which is quite unique for this part of Tanzania, and the spa offers a good way to unwind after a day out. It’s a property where you can balance safari with proper downtime, which we think works really well.
