When most people picture a Kenyan safari, the Masai Mara immediately springs to mind: vast golden savannahs, dramatic river crossings, and the Big Five roaming free. But just beyond the borders of the national reserve, you’ll find another side to safari: the private conservancies. Both offer incredible wildlife encounters, yet they cater to different safari styles. Here’s how to decide which is right for you.
The Masai Mara – Iconic and Action-Packed
The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the most famous safari destinations in the world, and for good reason.
Wildlife Density: The Mara is home to a staggering variety of wildlife year-round, including lion prides, leopard, cheetah, elephants, and more.
The Great Migration: From July to October, millions of wildebeest and zebra make their way across the Mara River in one of nature’s greatest spectacles.
Photography Heaven: Open plains and dramatic backdrops make for incredible photography opportunities.
Accessibility: Daily flights from Nairobi or direct connections from other safari destinations make it easy to reach.
Consider if:
You want to witness the Great Migration, don’t mind sharing sightings with other vehicles, and dream of those classic wide-angle safari shots you’ve seen in documentaries.
The Conservancies – Exclusive and Immersive
Private conservancies, such as Naboisho, Olare Motorogi, or Mara North, border the national reserve but operate under a different set of rules. Here’s what makes them special:
Fewer Vehicles: Strict limits on the number of guests and vehicles mean you’ll often have sightings to yourself.
Expanded Activities: Night game drives, walking safaris, and off-road tracking are allowed, experiences not permitted inside the national reserve.
Community Focus: Conservancy fees directly support local Maasai landowners, making your visit a key part of conservation and community development.
Wildlife Richness: Since animals roam freely between the reserve and conservancies, you won’t miss out on the action.
Consider if:
You value privacy, want a more varied safari experience beyond traditional game drives, and love the idea of supporting community-based conservation.
The Best of Both Worlds
You don’t have to choose one or the other. In fact, many of our guests at Ololo Safaris split their time between two nights in the Masai Mara and two or three nights in a conservancy. This way, you can:
Spend time in the heart of the action during the Great Migration.
Enjoy the peace, exclusivity, and unique activities of the conservancies.
Experience different styles of camps — from adventurous tented stays to luxurious eco-lodges.
