A Walking Safari Through Kenya’s Untamed Landscapes

Guests will begin with three nights at Ololo Safari Lodge, a peaceful base to unwind after their journey to Kenya. Here they can head out on game drives in Nairobi National Park, visit the famous Elephant Orphanage, stroll through Ololo’s working farm, and enjoy long, lazy afternoons by the river.

From there, the real adventure begins with a three-night hike through the Loita Hills and the Great Rift Valley. Guided by local Maasai, guests will walk ancient elephant trails under the forest canopy, cross open glades, and climb to panoramic peaks with endless views across the valley. Nights are spent in simple mobile camps, supported by a traditional donkey caravan, with campfire dinners under star-filled skies. It is a slow, deeply personal journey through one of Kenya’s most untouched and beautiful landscapes.

  • Day 1: River Camp
After a scenic drive from Nairobi or the Mara, guests will meet the team at Morijo and hike for about three hours to River Camp in the Ol Lasur Valley. After settling in, there will be hot showers, a campfire dinner under the stars, and a cosy night’s sleep.

  • Day 2: Oltyiani Camp
The day’s hike heads to Oltyiani, the highest point in the Loita Hills, with stunning views over the Rift Valley and a chance to visit a hidden waterfall. Walks are gentle to steep, covering around five to six hours in total, with a relaxed lunch stop along the way.

  • Day 3: Ngurumans Camp
After breakfast, guests will continue down ancient animal trails, hiking through forest and into open country as they descend into the Great Rift Valley. Camps are set up at Ngurumans Camp, offering incredible views across the escarpment.

  • Day 4: Departure
After an early breakfast and a final three-hour walk to Enkomongo, a vehicle will be waiting to transfer guests back to Nairobi or onward to their next destination.

This trail is not just about the stunning landscapes, but about slowing down, walking through nature, and sharing the journey with the Maasai guides who call this beautiful area home.

Loita Hills, Great Rift Valley

3 Nights

Tucked away northwest of the Maasai Mara is the "Forest of the Lost Child," a beautiful indigenous forest rich with lush plants and wildlife. Open clearings and towering peaks reaching over 2,150 metres rise from the dense canopy, offering breathtaking views that stretch as far as the horizon.

Nights

The Maasai Trails take you deep into one of Kenya’s most untouched and culturally rich areas. This is the land of the Loita Maasai, often described as the most traditional of all Maasai communities. Here, the forest, valleys, and rolling hills have remained largely unchanged for centuries.

The hiking experience at Maasai Trails is all about slowing down and connecting with the land. You will be walking alongside experienced Maasai guides, many of whom have grown up here and know every tree, track and trail. The hikes vary from gentle strolls through open grasslands to more challenging climbs up to rocky viewpoints that look out over the Rift Valley.

Along the way, you will pass through dense indigenous forests, open glades, and ridge lines where the views seem to stretch forever. You will learn about medicinal plants, traditional Maasai customs, and how the Maasai have lived in balance with nature for generations.

The beauty of the Maasai Trails is that it is completely tailored to you. You can choose to spend a few hours hiking between camps each day, or take on longer day hikes if you are feeling adventurous. At the end of each day’s walk, you arrive at charming, simple camps where a warm meal, cold drink and campfire stories are waiting for you.
