Saruni Rhino

Location

Go black rhino tracking on foot at this boutique bush camp.

Comprised of four elegant ‘bandas’ (rustic stone cottages) and a main ‘mess’ cottage for dining and relaxing, Saruni Rhino is nestled among swaying doum palms along a dry river bed, offering sweeping views of a nearby waterhole and the dramatic landscape typical of northern Kenya. The camp features a beautiful infinity swimming pool built in harmony with the surrounding natural beauty. By night, the dry river bed transforms into the quintessential setting for torch-lit bush dinners under vast African skies.

Overview

Conservation and Culture

From its raised setting, this safari camp overlooks a dry riverbed, with shade provided by palm trees and thorny acacias. The prospect of water and minerals draws many animals to the riverbed, making the camp the perfect place to while away a morning or afternoon watching as they come and go.

The riverbed is also the scene for many of the most memorable Saruni Rhino experiences, including starlit bush dinners, guided walking safaris, and lessons in tracking from the local guides, who draw on their expertise to identify and locate endangered species from marks in the sand that could easily escape the untrained eye.

Stone bandas

Saruni Rhino is a 4-banda camp. A banda is a rustic stone cottage with a thatched roof and canvas zip down windows and doors. All bandas have flushing loos, hot & cold water and natural stone showers. The bandas are situated along a dry river bed lined with beautiful doum palms in a way that ensures maximum privacy for guests, but intimate enough for group bookings on an exclusive basis.

Activities

Rhino tracking on foot

Morning and afternoon game drives: Guests can enjoy morning, afternoon and all day game drives through Sera Community conservancy; a fantastic habitat for African wildlife - especially the Samburu Special Five - baisa Oryx, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk and Grevy's zebra.

Rhion tracking experience on foot: Rhino tracking is at the heart of the Saruni Rhino experience. Guests set out on foot with an experienced Saruni guide and a skilled ranger from the Sera Community Conservancy to follow black rhino through the bush. Using location monitoring to narrow down their movements, the vehicle brings you close before the final approach is made on foot. From there, it’s a quiet, focused walk that may lead to an unforgettable encounter with one of Africa’s most remarkable animals. Tracking times are carefully managed, so days follow a more structured rhythm than at most camps, but this considered approach is what makes the experience so special.

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary: Located in Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in Samburu County of Northern Kenya, Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the first community owned and managed elephant sanctuary in Africa.

Singing Wells visit: Sera Community is also home to The Fifty Wells, ‘Kisima Hamsini’, a series of (50!) springs where local pastoralists take their livestock to water, digging up water from the wells to fill up holders and troughs. The Singing Wells are also a driving distance away and can be visited with some notice – a rare treat to see the local community singing proprietary songs recognisable only by their own cattle, to encourage them to come to the wells to drink.
