Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, is a small and relaxed city set in the central highlands, often serving as the starting point for a self-drive safari.
We like to include a night in Windhoek at the start of the journey to give you time to settle in after your flight and prepare for the adventure ahead. It’s an easy introduction to Namibia, with a calm atmosphere and a mix of cultures and influences.
Spend your first evening unwinding at your guesthouse, or head out for a relaxed dinner in town. There’s time to pick up any last essentials, get comfortable with your vehicle, and ease into the pace of travel before heading out into Namibia’s wide open landscapes the following day.

Located in the heart of the Namib Desert, Sossusvlei is known for its towering red dunes, some of the highest in the world, and its striking desert landscapes.
Sossusvlei is one of Namibia’s most iconic destinations, where vast open skies meet endless rolling dunes. Early mornings here are particularly special, as the rising sun casts changing colours across the sand, creating a landscape that feels both peaceful and dramatic.
We recommend setting out early to climb some of the world’s highest free-standing dunes, including the famous Dune 45 and Big Daddy, for sweeping views across the desert. Explore Deadvlei with its ancient camelthorn trees, and enjoy guided excursions that reveal the unique plants and wildlife adapted to this harsh yet beautiful environment.

Hoodia Desert Lodge is a comfortable, owner-run lodge just outside Sossusvlei. It’s a great base for exploring the dunes, with a relaxed atmosphere, spacious rooms, and genuinely warm hosting.
Swakopmund, a coastal town on Namibia’s Atlantic coast, blends German colonial charm with adventure and dramatic desert-meets-ocean scenery.
Set between the Atlantic Ocean and the Namib Desert, Swakopmund offers a refreshing change of pace and climate. Its seaside setting and relaxed atmosphere make it a natural pause in your journey.
Spend your time here as actively or leisurely as you like. From scenic coastal walks and cafés to optional activities like sandboarding, quad biking or marine cruises, there’s something for everyone. It’s also a great place to simply slow down and enjoy the contrast between desert and ocean.
